What is the Questioning Oak?
Welcome to The Questioning Oak!
What is The Questioning Oak? This is a blog associated with New Life Church Magnolia. The purpose of this blog is to glorify God, by helping you grow, as a disciple, in your faith in Jesus and your love for one another. I want to do that by answering questions—yours or my own.
Now, let me share a neat story (also the inspiration for the name of this blog) with you.
In Steal Away Home, by Matt Carter and Aaron Ivey, a book about a former slave turned missionary, Thomas Johnson, and his unlikely friend, the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon, Carter and Ivey share a story from the latter part of Spurgeon’s life.
In the story, the Spurgeon’s health is fading and the London fog of the late 1800s has forced them to move to a new home, the Westwood house, located just south of London on an expansive property that quickly became a place of refuge for the Spurgeon’s and so many others. Here’s the part I found particularly fascinating:
“…in the middle of the expansive area that overlooked the lake, stood a large and lonely oak tree. Charles immediately loved the old oak tree with its stretched branches and wide leaves. It stood as tall as the Westwood house, and perfectly provided a place of conversation and view of the city below. Charles appropriately named the tree, the Questioning Oak, as he found that most guests that visited Westwood enjoyed sitting under the tree and asking “The Governor” questions. He embraced the opportunity, allowing anyone to ask him any question they wanted. No questions were off limits…Whether hard or easy—every single question was answered without a moment’s hesitation from their vulnerable and honest pastor underneath the Questioning Oak.”
I hope this space provides something similar for you. Though, I admit, it’s not perfect, mostly because it’s online and that limits our ability for dialogue. But I do think this can be valuable for us in so many other ways.
Here’s how I hope it’ll work. I, or one of the other Elders of NLCM, will submit content at various times about various topics. But we also want to answer your questions about anything you choose (with wisdom, of course). All you have to do to participate is submit a question using the form below.
We look forward to joining you in your pursuit of Biblical truth and we thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey.
Grace and peace,
Kyle J.
